Finding Your Way

How to Use This Book

You do not need to read this book from beginning to end. Start with the situation that feels most familiar, or most pressing, and move around as you need to.

What each situation contains

Every situation follows a similar shape, so you will always know where to find what you need:

  1. The two experiences. A short picture of the difficult experience and the protective one, side by side.
  2. What the child might learn. The beliefs a child may carry forward, often shown in a table.
  3. How it may show up in adulthood. Patterns in relationships, work, self-talk and parenting.
  4. Triggers and underlying needs. What can set these patterns off, and what may have been missing.
  5. For Adults. Practical steps and a reflection exercise for working with the pattern in your own life.
  6. For Parents. Everyday ways to offer children the protective experience, a seven-day family practice, and questions to reflect on.
  7. The central lesson. A short summary to return to.

Making it your own

  • Tick off your seven-day practice. Each situation has a seven-day checklist. Tap a box when you have tried that day’s step. Your ticks are remembered on this device, so you can come back tomorrow and carry on.
  • Write in the reflection boxes. What you type stays private. It is saved only in this browser on this device and is never sent to anyone, including the author.
  • Use the optional check-ins. Some situations begin with a one-tap question about how you feel today, and you can answer it again after your seven days to see what has changed. You can also tap to say whether a situation felt familiar or helpful. These are always optional, and anything you choose to share is anonymous.
  • Prefer paper? The complete book is available as a printable PDF.
  • Go slowly. One situation, one step or one day of practice at a time is enough. Change tends to come from small, repeated actions rather than big resolutions.
  • If you are a parent, choose one practice rather than trying everything at once. Missing a day is not failure; it is simply a day to start again.

About this free edition

This is the free preview edition of the book. Situation 1 and Situation 14 are free to read in full, with their seven-day practices, reflection exercises and check-ins. Every other situation opens with its story and what the child might learn, so you can see what it covers.

The complete book, with all 41 situations in full, is available as a printable PDF. Look for the “Unlock the full book” button at the end of each preview.

About your privacy

Your ticks, reflections and check-in answers are stored only in your own browser. If you use a shared or public device, you can clear them at any time with the “Clear my answers on this device” button at the bottom of each situation.

When you tap “helpful”, “familiar” or “share anonymously”, only the numbers are sent (for example, “Situation 4: before 2, after 4”). No names, email addresses, written reflections or tracking cookies are collected. These anonymous totals help the author understand which parts of the book are most useful.
